Make a Difference ... Keep Your Distance.

Posted on March 31, 2020 at 4:44 PM by Penny Johnston

We are anxiously looking forward to getting back to business throughout the City once we have stopped the spread of the Coronavirus-19.  We all recognize that we are in this together and it will take all of us to turn it around.  COVID-19 is a real threat and needs to be taken seriously. Please protect your friends and loved ones and yourself by following the guidelines that have been issued by Executive Order of the Governor of Florida.  The County has adopted a good slogan:  Make a Difference, Keep Your Distance.

There are necessary changes that have been made to curb the spread of COVID-19 because groups of people have not complied in some areas, endangering everyone’s well-being. As our community recognizes the severity of the situation, it is hoped those closures can be kept to a minimum. Our failure to step-up and work together will only extend the length of this crisis. The obvious fact is that the more seriously the public commits to the guidelines, the sooner we can resume our normal lifestyles.

For the people on the front lines protecting you such as healthcare workers, first responders, all those working in essential areas of public service and all their supporting entities who are unable to stay home; let’s show our appreciation to each of them by doing our best to stay safe, stay apart, and stay home.

Put the Phone Down While Driving

Posted on July 1, 2019 at 9:55 AM by Penny Johnston

The Florida Department of Highways Safety and Motor Vehicles is partnering with the Florida Department of Transportation and law enforcement partners to educate Floridians on the changes to distracted driving law with the Put It Down: Focus on Driving campaign. The Wireless Communications While Driving Law, section 316.305, Florida Statutes, takes effect on July 1, 2019. This new law requires drivers to put their phones down and focus on driving.

What is the Wireless Communications While Driving Law?

Section 316.305, Florida Statutes allows law enforcement to stop motor vehicles and issue citations to motorists that are texting and driving. A person may not operate a motor vehicle while manually typing or entering multiple letters, numbers or symbols into a wireless communications device to text, email and instant message.

Section 316.306, Florida Statutes, is a prohibition on using wireless communications devices in a handheld manner in school and work zone.  A person may not operate a motor vehicle while using a wireless communications device in a handheld manner in a designated school crossing, school zone or active work zone area.
